Kaal Sarp Dosha काल सर्प दोष
Kaal Sarp Dosha forms when all seven classical planets fall on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis, hemmed between the two lunar nodes. It is said to create a sense of struggle, delay and effort that outpaces reward, but it is a yoga of intensity, not doom: many highly accomplished people have it, and its effect depends heavily on which of the twelve types you have and how strong the trapped planets are.
The twelve types of Kaal Sarp
There are twelve named forms (Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, Shankhpal, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak, Karkotak, Shankhachur, Ghatak, Vishdhar and Sheshnag), decided by which houses Rahu and Ketu occupy. Each colours a different area of life, career, marriage, money, health, so a blanket 'Kaal Sarp' verdict tells you very little without the type.
A partial Kaal Sarp, where one planet sits just outside the axis, is much milder and often treated as no dosha at all. This distinction is routinely missed by free calculators.
What it actually feels like
People with genuine Kaal Sarp often describe a pattern of last-minute obstacles, sudden ups and downs, and success that arrives later than expected but can be substantial once it comes. It tends to sharpen ambition. The Rahu and Ketu mahadasha and antardasha periods are when it is felt most.
Remedies (upaya)
- Rahu-Ketu shanti puja, traditionally performed at Trimbakeshwar (Nashik) or Kalahasti.
- Chant the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra and offer water to a Shivling on Mondays and Nag Panchami.
- Donate on Saturdays and keep a disciplined routine; Kaal Sarp responds well to structure and patience during Rahu-Ketu dashas.
Does your chart actually have this dosha?
Free calculators give a yes/no from partial rules and over-report doshas. JYTS.H computes it from your exact birth time across all reference points (ascendant, Moon and Venus), weighs cancellations, and tells you the real strength, not just a scary label.

Frequently asked questions
Is Kaal Sarp Dosha real or a myth?
Kaal Sarp is a modern classification not found in the oldest texts, so many traditional astrologers treat it cautiously. Where all planets truly sit between Rahu and Ketu it can indicate an intense, effort-heavy life pattern, but the fear around it is often exaggerated by remedy sellers.
How do I remove Kaal Sarp Dosha?
There is nothing to 'remove'; it is your chart. Classical remedies aim to ease its intensity: Rahu-Ketu shanti puja, Maha Mrityunjaya chanting, and steady discipline through the Rahu and Ketu dasha periods. Confirm the type first, since partial Kaal Sarp is usually mild.
Can a person with Kaal Sarp be successful?
Very much so. Kaal Sarp concentrates effort and ambition; many accomplished figures have it. Success often arrives later than for others but can be large. The type and the strength of the trapped planets decide the outcome.
