Answer

What is kundli matching (gun milan) and how does it work?

Kundli matching, or gun milan, scores the compatibility of two birth charts out of 36 points across eight koota factors, based mainly on the couple's Moon signs and nakshatras. A total of 18 or above is considered acceptable and 24 or above very good. It also checks for blocks like Nadi and Bhakoot dosha, which can outweigh a high raw score.

The eight kootas (Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi) each test a different layer of compatibility, from temperament and mutual attraction to health, mental wiring and progeny. Nadi carries the most points (8) and is tied to genetic and progeny concerns, which is why a Nadi dosha is taken seriously even when the total is high.

Ashtakoota is a screen, not the whole story. A strong score can still hide problems if the seventh houses or Mars placements clash, and a middling score can work well when the rest of both charts support it. Serious matchmakers read the full charts, Manglik status and dasha timing alongside the 36-point total.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good gun milan score for marriage?

18 out of 36 is the traditional minimum, 24 and above is considered a good match. Below 18 is discouraged unless doshas cancel and the wider charts are supportive.

Is low gun milan a reason to reject a marriage?

Not by itself. A low koota score can be offset by dosha cancellations and strong chart-level compatibility. It should trigger a fuller reading, not an automatic no.
