What is a Mahadasha in Vedic astrology?
A Mahadasha is a multi-year planetary period in the Vimshottari dasha system, during which one of the nine planets governs the main themes of your life. The 120-year cycle is divided among the planets (Venus 20 years, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, and so on), and the planet running now shapes what areas of life are active, easy or challenged.
Your first Mahadasha at birth is set by your Moon's nakshatra, and the sequence follows a fixed order from there. Within each Mahadasha are sub-periods (antardashas) of every planet, so the texture of a period comes from the combination, a Jupiter Mahadasha with a Saturn antardasha reads very differently from Jupiter-Venus.
Dasha is what makes Vedic astrology predictive rather than descriptive: the same birth chart delivers different results at different times depending on which planet's period is running and how that planet is placed in your chart. Reading the current and upcoming dashas is how astrologers time events.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know which Mahadasha I am running?
It is computed from your Moon's exact nakshatra position at birth, so you need an accurate birth time. The current Mahadasha and antardasha, with their dates, come straight from the chart.
Which Mahadasha is the best?
There is no universally best dasha; it depends on how that planet sits in your own chart. A well-placed Saturn period can outperform a poorly placed Jupiter period.
